(Islamic Intellectual Integration)

INTRODUCTION
In order to produce a good Muslim medical practitioner, it is essential to integrate the intellectual superiority with the Islamic principles based on Al-Quran and Sunnah. With regard to that, Persatuan Perubatan Islam Malaysia-Student Chapter IIUM would organize a symposium called "Triple I-Medicine Symposium 2006 (Islamic Intellectual Integration)". The first of its kind was held on the year 2004 with the theme "Da'wah Fardiyyah in Medical Practice". The second was held last year, with the theme "Securing the Lineage" in which the importance of reproductive or women health awareness in securing the wellbeing of the up coming generation was highlighted.

This year, we hope to continue the annual event which we believed is a good platform where muslim medical students from all over the country can gather and exchange ideas on the highlighted issues. As a continuation of the previous symposium, this year another component of the Maqasid Shariah; Securing the `Aql is chosen as the theme. In Islam, the `aql or the mind is a distinguishing feature of mankind from all the other creations of Allah. It can be said to be the most superior possession of human being for the fact that with it we are placed at a higher level than the ever-obedient slaves of Allah, the angels. In medicine, the importance of having a sound mind is made prominent in the field of psychiatry.

Today, more and more people seek treatment for their `aql. Some even became dependent on drugs which they believe is the only solution to have a sound mind. Among the adolescence, especially, drug abuse is seen as the only way for them to relieve their mind from a so-called stressful modern life. It is therefore our responsibility as future medical practitioners to find ways of how to secure the mind of our ummah from this very contagious illness of the jahilliyyah. We hope that with this symposium, we would be able to discuss and learn how we can apply the Islamic teachings in dealing with the psychiatric patients.

In Islam, it is known that the pursuit of knowledge has a double indication Apart from its worldly application, pursuit of knowledge is in itself worship, according to the Quranic guidance. Thus, muslim medical practitioners have far bigger responsibility to not only acquire and apply their modern medical knowledge, but also, they should be in possession of a threshold-knowledge of jurisprudence, worship and essentials of Fiqh enabling them to give counsel to patient seeking guidance about health and bodily conditions with a bearing of the rites of worship. The great advances of a Muslim physician were not just based on technical skill or intellectual superiority. They were equally well founded on a clear understanding of the role of the Muslim physician as derived from Islamic teachings and philosophy. In the previous 2 years since the triple-I symposium was first held, the event had annually exposed its participants to the various issues related to fiqh medicine in daily clinical practice. This year is no exception. Due to the very positive response from participants, the organizing committee had decided to keep the slot in the event. This year, the presentation shall be different and hopefully better, so as to meet the ever increasing expectation of the participants.

OBJECTIVES

1. To introduce the Islamic way of managing psychiatric patients.
2. To expose participants with the happenings of the ummah worldwide
3. To induce participants to think deeply on themselves, the ummah and Islam.
4. To produce individuals who can spread the light of Islam in every aspects of their life.
5. To foster closer Islamic brotherhood, understanding, cooperation and collaboration within the PPIM-SC members
6. To produce intellectuals and professionals within whom the values of taqwa and adab are inculcated
7. To live up to the Islamic standards of ethics in our personal and professional conduct
8. To provide a better opportunity for the exchange of ideas and information among the participants

REPORT ON TRIPLE-I SYMPOSIUM 2005: SECURING THE LINEAGE

Triple-I Medicine (Islamic Intellectual Integration) Symposium 2004
Theme : “Securing The Lineage”
Date : 27th - 28th August 2005 (Saturday - Sunday)
Venue : Indera Mahkota Campus, Kulliyyah of Medicine, IIUM Kuantan
Advisor : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ariff Osman.

Triple-I Medicine Symposium is an annual national program organized by Islamic Medical Association Malaysia- Student Chapter of International Islamic University Malaysia (IMAM-SC- IIUM). The main focus of the program is to educate and instill awareness among the participants especially those involved in the medical practice to inculcate Islamic values in this field. This is parallel to the motto of the program: Islamic, Intellectual, Integration.

The year 2005, the same symposium was conducted with a new theme: “Securing the lineage”. Among the objectives of the program are to have an integration of the Islamic and the intellectual understanding on the issues of gender, women health, or reproductive health. It also provides opportunity for the participants to learn the best method in approaching the community, exchange of ideas and information, foster closer Islamic brotherhood, understanding, cooperation and collaboration.

There were 200 participants of the symposium, 58 among them were committee members. The participants were among the medical students of IIUM Kuantan Campus and 114 medical students from other medical institutes: Matriculation Centre of IIUM (MCIIUM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), International Medical University (IMU), Universiti Malaya (UM), Kolej Univeriti Islam Malaysia (KUIM). Besides that, there were also participants from allied- health science students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and also Malaysian medical students who are studying in overseas as they were in holidays. The invitation letters to the representatives for each universities and institutes were sent since one month before, including posters and tentatives of the program. The registration fees: RM15 for internal students and RM25 for external students. These included payment for food, files and accommodation for participants from outside.

Most of the participants from outside arrived on Friday (26th August) night and spent their two nights at Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi (SBPI) during the program. It was a pleasure for us to have the permission from the headmaster of Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi (SBPI) to use some of the school’s dormitories as the students were in school holiday. Their transporation between the school and Indera Mahkota Campus of IIUM was provided by the organizers with IIUM buses.

The program started on Saturday (27th August 2005), with the arrival of participants at Kuliyyah of Medicine,Indera Mahkota Campus at 7.30 a.m. After they had their breakfast, the participants were asked to register and assemble at auditorium for the opening ceremony, which began at 9.30 a.m and was officiated by the Dean of Kuliyyah of Medicine, IIUM, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Md. Tahir b. Azhar. After that, a prime talk was given by the guest of honour (Prof. Dato’ Dr. Md. Tahir) at 9.40 a.m. In his talk, the aim of the symposium, which is to realize the ideal medicine were elaborated and main objectives of medicine were also explained. In addition, the term Islamicization was stressed and clarified as it is one of the triple-I motto (Islamic Intellectual Integration).

After tea break, the program continued with talks by Ustaz Adham Che Kob (JAIP representative) on the importance of securing the lineage in Islamic view and law, Dr. Abu Dharr Greengrass on “The Preservation of Progeny According to Islamic Guidance” and Prof. Dr. Ariff Osman on the “Plenary of Securing the Lineage”. Mainly, the theme of the symposium were discussed and talked by the speakers in which the reproductive and women health is crucial as to secure the wellbeing of the upcoming generation. The participants were also stimulated with the awareness of their roles as concern citizen to address current problems on reproductive health.

In the evening, more interactive session was being held. After lunch and Zuhr prayer, the participants were asked to be in their respective groups, and each group was given with certain cases regarding fiqh issues in medical practice to be solved. There were 10 cases of accidental injury which were prepared by the committees and the participants had to act on how the patients would perform their ibadah like praying and taking ablution. This session was also being supervised by Ustaz Wan Ruzaimi, a lecturer in Kuliyyah of Usul Fiqh, IIUM Gombak. Many questions and confusions being raised and the participants gained a lot of benefits from this activity as they got thorough explanation from Ustaz Wan Ruzaimi. Then the program continued with a talk by Dr. Puteri Melor on “The Islamic Construction On Gender” after tea break.

At night, a forum was held in title of “Between Culture, Health and Religion”. The panelist were among the experts of Kuliyyah Medicine itself: Prof. Dato’ Md Tahir, Dr. Jamal, and Dr. Nora with Br. Sham Amir as the moderator. The issues of Malay attitude and culture toward reproductive health were being focused in this forum and the condition of health care system in Malaysia was also being explained by the panelist. The forum finished at 11.00 p.m. and all the participants were sent back to the SBPI by IIUM buses.

On the next day, the participants came to the Kuliyyah of Medicine building along with their luggages. After breakfast, a morning Tazkirah was given by Ustaz Ali on “Concept of Tawakkal”. After that, Dr. Roszaman Ramli from Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology gave a talk on “Ethical issues in Reproductive Medicine”. The program continued with presentation from Br. Zafri Ismadi, a 5th year medical student as he presented his previous elective posting in Aceh, Indonesia. Most of the participants, who majority were pre-clinical students, were inspired by this presentation to benefit their upcoming elective postings wisely. Then they proceeded with project planning in their groups and presented the given topics which were basically based on the topics being delivered along the two days program.

At 12.00 p.m., the closing ceremony was held and was officially closed by the Dean of Kuliyyah of Nursing, Prof. Dr. Kamaruzzaman. The participants were given with certificates and a photography session were also being held before they all had their lunch and went back to their respective universities and faculties in the evening.

Overall, the program is considered to be success and achieved its objectives though many technical problems need to be improved, especially the time management of the programs. A better accommodation and food for the participants are also need to be provided for the participants in the future. Apart from that, may this tireless effort being blessed by Allah s.w.t.

Sebanyak 24org datang berkumpul di IMU membentuk halaqah bagi mengikat janji untuk sama-sama berkomited dalam perjuangan yang tiada noktah melainkan mati. Wakil-wakil dari berbagai jenis universiti di seluruh Malaysia telah datang bagi merealisasikan impian.

Ketika rakan2 lain masih tidur, kami membongkok2 mencari jalan menuju ke IMU. Disitulah, jumpalah cahaya yang lama dinantikan. Sejam bersama Prof Latiff (Presiden PPIM) dirasakan tidak mencukupi. Mengapa masa itu terlalu bersifat cemburu? Impian dikongsi bersama supaya mimpi dapat menjadi kenyataan.Meremang bulu roma mendengar setiap patah perkataan yg diutarakan. Terasa banyak perlu dimunasabah kembali.

Al-zumar.
itulah yang melekat di fikiran.
Ingin
merasa jalan pintas menuju ke syurga dan semakin mahu terbang laju ke SyUrgA
FiRdAuSi.
maka,kerja keras diperlukan dari saat ini.
tanpa henti.
tanpa kecewa.
tanpa alasan.

Oleh kerana Dr Munawar terpaksa membatalkan kehadiran di saat akhir kerana masalah tidak dapat dielakkan, slot pagi diisi dengan seratus penerangan dan seribu pertanyaan. Memang banyak soalan yang berbangkit tentang ppim dari visi,misi,objektif. dan wajib semua soalan itu dijawab supaya tidak timbul kekusutan di akhir hari. Terima kasih bagi yang menanyakan soalan,kerana itu yang membuatkan otak ligat berfikir.

Dr. Aidil datang juga akhirnya walaupun sesat pada mulanya. Dia oncall hari itu,tapi dia tetap datang tanpa memikirkan waktu rehat yang sempit.Dia sanggup datang untuk bersama kami. Sedikit pengisian dikongsi supaya masalah terdahulu tidak berulang kembali.

Petang itu,halaqah menjadi kecil kerana ada yang terpaksa balik kerana hal-hal tertentu. Memang susah mengumpulkan orang2, tapi alhamdulillah induksi tetap dijalankan dengan lancar. Review takwin kembali supaya dapat mengenalpasti masalah yang bakal ditimbul.

Akhirnya, Dr Yussra datang. Bau Sabah melekat dihidung.Orang penting datang tanpa paluan kompang. Sempoi tapi berisi pendapatnya.Memang kami akui,kami perlukan tunjuk ajar dari senior2 yang berdedikasi ini. Dan disini kami berkumpul sebagai satu pasukan dalam satu impian yang sama adalah hasil dari mereka yang gigih tanpa jemu.

Memang sehari sebelum induksi, perasaan malas, lemah dan futur telah bersarang. Bingung dengan keadaan skeliling. Semuanya serabut.Tertekan jika tidak berjaya melakukan yang terbaik. Termangu menunggu sms yg tidak bbalas.deretan sms pula kunjung tiba menantikan jawapan. kerja2 pelajaran semakin menimbun walaupun telah membakar pelita di tengah malam untuk menyiapkannya. Ingin sekali membunuh kemalasan yang sudah lama bersarang di hati.

Sabtu itulah menemukan ombak2 hebat itu.
dan pasti kamu-kamu-kamu-dan-saya ingin menjadi ombak2 hebat itu.
mengaum tanpa henti dilautan itu
merubah lautan tenang itu
itulah dia semangat ombak luar biasa itu.

Ayuh, bersiap sedia untuk menjadi Al-zumar.
kita sama2 naik flying carpet terbang tanpa henti ke firdausi!

Post-PPIM 8th scientific meeting

assalamualaikum
alhamdulillah, everything went on smoothly, (at least on imu's part.)

friday
we took off from sripetaling lrt station at approximately 7pm,
reached titiwangsa station at 7.30+. arrived at grand season at
around 8pm ( as agreed). boarded the upm bus at around 9+pm. and the
journey began.........

saturday
arrived safely at kota bharu around 5am, went to aizudin's house,
got ready for the pre congress workshop, which was sceduled at
8.30am. reached HUSM at 9am (heh!). the workshop was excellent. it
really gave us a better perspective on the topic we usually avoid
most- DEATH.
at 9pm in the evening, attended PPIM_SC meeting. roughly discussed
on stuuf regarding commitee member and long-term plan. Dr Latif was
present, and delivered some inspiring speech to us, new generation
of doctor.
watched world cup match. fatin was delighted that portugal is going
to semi final. the happiness won't last long though, because
portugal's next opponent will be germany, hehe

sunday
went to renaissance hotel to attend PPIM's 8th scientific meeting.
officiated by deputy minister of finance. the plenary was excellent.
unfortunately, we had to leave early as the bus will take off at 4pm
that evening. managed to grab some buah tangan from pasar siti
khadijah. went back to aizudin's house, packed our stuff, had some
quick lunch and went to balai islam where the bus was. we took off
at approximately 5pm. reached grand season hotel at 3.30am. picked
up by muhsin's dad. went for some meal (sahur?). finally reached my
house in vista komanwel at 5am.

i would like to thank:-
saudari zakiah- for the transportation
saudara aizudin- for accomodation and some scrumptious meal, and
that nice big tv for us to watch world cup match
saudara muhsin- for his dad, willingly to pick us up in the wee
hour, and the meal at mamak stall
and each and everyone who directly, or indirectly has contributed in
making this memorable trip a success.
